We’re weird, that’s why. Actually, we’re just weird in modern day standards…Harley especially.
Harley is one of the tried and true barefoot runners. He has been running for several years without fancy sneakers. In fact, he runs without any shoes at all. And he got me hooked too. It just took some convincing before I bought into it.
Our feet have evolved to absorb the impact of our bodies, adjust to different terrain and give us feedback on our strides. When we put loads of cushioning and padding around our feet and cram our toes into shapes that don’t allow them to stretch or spread, we remove every mechanism our body has to naturally balance our body.
One of the best resources for more information on barefoot running is the book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Read it. You will come away in awe.
And if you see Harley running on the side of the road with no shoes on, don’t panic. He’s enjoying himself.
